The Single Biggest Problem in Communication

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion it has taken place.

I think the mother of all problems is unmet expectations through incorrect assumptions; remember that people aren’t mind readers – assuming someone will just get what you expect of them is a recipe for disaster.

Also people need to listen to understand, not to respond. It’s not a coincidence that the word “listen” and the word “silent” have the same letters!

How can you improve? As the listener, you can practice repeating or paraphrasing back what you’ve just heard. This shows your attention is zoomed in (e.g. not distracted, on phone, typing, looking out a window etc), you’re present. This isn’t appropriate in all circumstances of course, however it’s good practice for being attentive – both in business and in your personal life.
